What are you reading? If you're not reading, what is your favorite genre?

I always seem to be reading something. Usually two somethings. One fiction and one nonfiction. My nonfiction topic genre as of late, has revolved around the innerworkings of books and marketing. Lots to be learned there, let me tell you. This past week, I finished a little something titled, "Your First 1000 Copies" by Tim Grahl. I'm telling you right now, if you are an author or aspiring writer, check that beauty out. It is small but mighty. Mighty useful. Simple and powerful, and not to mention, very clear with instructions on how to plan out a practical and realistic book marketing plan. Thank me later.

Now on the fiction side of the house, I have chosen to dive into the inner dark dwellings of one early 20th century author, H.P. Lovecraft. He is known as a pioneer in modern day horror fiction. I was fortunate enough to be gifted with his entire collection, which is quite extensive. The first collection is titled "Macabre Stories". There are five other entire books filled with his novels and short stories. He is quite famous for creating the mythology of Cthulhu, which at this moment, I know almost nothing about. (I will take your judgement and cozy on up to it while I read)

Now you may be wondering why a fantasy author would venture into the dark stories of horror fiction...Well, the reason, of course, is that I love the genre. However, another practical usage is one of research. No, not to describe the icky squishy gory side of horror, but the suspense and anticipation building of horror. Something I love deeply. That sort of delicious torture you endure when the cliffhanger at the end of the scene hits you. You just feel desperate for the next piece, almost like it's a drug you're hooked on and can't quite seem to quit the habit. That is the kind of technique I am trying to learn. So, of course I will do my best to learn from the best.

Soon, however, I will be venturing back into some good old-fashioned fantasy. After my pitstop into horror I plan to pick up either, "Eragon" by Christopher Paolini. It has been a solid fifteen years since I cracked the spine of that story. Or my other option is "Mistborn" by Brandon Sanderson. I embarrassingly admit to not having read a single word of his work. I aim to change that. All this reading will be pumping me full of writing vigor to continue my own writing journey on my adventure to finish my fantasy series and a slew of other wonderful stories in the future.
